Launching in April, the Guelph Wellington Seniors Association (GWSA)’s Walking Club quickly became a popular and meaningful addition to its programming. The club met twice a week and attracted steady participation from the very first week, with new members joining as word spread. Participants continued attending even in less than ideal weather, demonstrating an impressive level of commitment and enthusiasm! The club was designed to be inclusive, welcoming older adults with varying mobility levels and focusing on participation, enjoyment, and progress rather than speed or distance. Members shared that the program helped them feel happier, more connected, more motivated, less isolated, and more engaged with their community.
The Walking Club has helped to create joy, connection, routine, and purpose for participating older adults. Participants planned their weeks around the walks, developed supportive friendships, and gained confidence in their abilities. Volunteer involvement further strengthened the welcoming atmosphere and supports the club’s long term sustainability. The positive feedback and continued enthusiasm from members show that the Walking Club has become a valued part of the participants’s lives and is making a meaningful difference in healthy aging and community well-being.
With a 2025 Community Grant, the GWSA purchased 35 walking poles for this club. The poles help older adults maintain balance and reduce the risk of falls, especially on uneven terrain, which has made the Walking Club a more welcoming and low barrier activity for seniors. The club created opportunities for participants to stay active while building friendships and a sense of belonging. Organizers observed smiles, laughter, lively conversations, and strong peer support among participants. Many members reported feeling more positive and energized after walks, while others shared that the program helped them stay motivated and provided structure and purpose each week. Unexpected outcomes included couples participating together, increased participation from men, and reports of improved sleep patterns. One participant even noted that walking helped speed recovery following cancer treatment!
The Guelph Wellington Seniors Association is dedicated to supporting healthy aging by providing programs that help older adults stay active, connected, and engaged in their community. Recognizing the importance of physical activity and social connection, the organization develops accessible programs that promote wellbeing, independence, and participation. Through initiatives like the Walking Club, older adults can improve fitness, build confidence, and strengthen community connections in a supportive environment.
