GCF’s Scholarships and Bursaries

Angelo and Rina Longo Scholarship

Angelo and Rina Longo, long-time residents of our community, created a scholarship fund to support students. They believe that it is important to encourage students who choose apprenticeship or workplace training as a form of post-secondary education, as well as university or college.

Eligibility Criteria:

• Student must be graduating from one of the listed high schools (including Bishop Macdonell CHS, Our Lady of Lourdes CHS, and St. James CHS) and pursuing postsecondary education.
• Student must be actively involved in their community.
• Student must demonstrate active participation in Catholic life.
• Student must be pursing nursing at post-secondary level.

Class of ’71 Kathryn Winegard Memorial Scholarship

This award is to honour a student graduating from Centennial C.V.I. in memory of Kathryn Winegard. This scholarship fund was established with the Class of ’71 and the Winegard family in memory of Dr. and Mrs. Winegard’s daughter.

Eligibility Criteria:

• Student must be graduating from Centennial C.V.I.
• Student must demonstrate potential for post-secondary success.
• Student must reflect the overall Centennial Spartan spirit.
• Student must have demonstrated determination and outstanding achievement.

Eric Goegan Scholarship Award

This scholarship was created in the memory of 17-year-old Eric Goegan who passed away December 22, 2012 in a motor vehicle accident. Eric was in his senior year at Bishop Macdonell and wanted to pursue a career in sports medicine. On Saturday, December 22nd, 2012, Eric also became a hero to his family and friends when he saved the lives of four people through organ donation. This scholarship is to remember Eric’s love of life and desire to follow his dreams.

Eligibility Criteria:

• The award supports a graduating student from Bishop Macdonell High School
• A graduating student in the current year who must be advancing their post secondary education (e.g. university, college, apprenticeship)
• Plays organized baseball at school and/or with other organized baseball team
• Demonstrates academic potential
• Demonstrates good sportsmanship

Frank Taylor Bursary

Frank Taylor created this bursary to support deserving students at Our Lady of Lourdes. During the War, Mr. Taylor served with the Royal Canadian Army Service Corp, Second Canadian Corps Transport Company, Canadian Army Overseas. Frank was awarded the French National Order of the Legion of Honour – the highest National Order of France at the Guelph Legion in February 2017. He passed away on July 31, 2018. Mr. Taylor was a tremendous supporter of the community and his legacy will live on forever through this award.

Eligibility Criteria:

• The award supports a graduating student from the following secondary school within the Wellington Catholic District School Board: Our Lady of Lourdes.

Iolanda Maugeri Hall Business Education Bursary

Iolanda Maugeri Hall dedicated her life to Hall Telecommunications Supply. She continually sacrificed herself to help others and she believed it is important to encourage students who choose post-secondary education who may have financial barriers to success. This Bursary was established in memory of Iolanda by her husband Don Beam and supported by his long time business partner and friend of Iolanda, Wanda Manning.

Eligibility Criteria:

• Student must be a resident of Wellington County and be graduating from Our Lady of Lourdes and pursuing post-secondary education in a business related program
• There is a demonstrated need for financial support
• Demonstrate respect for others and their community, potential to grow within their chosen area of study and may not necessarily qualify for any other student awards
• Student must be a woman, cisgender and transgender women are encouraged for nomination

Jamie Vickery Memorial Fund

This fund was established by Lenora Vickery in memory of her son Jamie who took his own life after suffering from Crohns and Colitis for many years. Lenora established the fund upon recommendation from her lawyer, John Valeriote. A gift of $10,000 was made. Her other son Brent, was also part of the discussion and advises his mother. He is owner of Numatech Industries in Guelph. Currently the fund supports an annual scholarship to Acton District High School.

Eligibility Criteria:

• Recipient must be a student from Acton District High School
• Demonstrated resilience, perseverance, and determination in overcoming significant personal challenges
• Demonstrated committment to pursuing their future goals

John A Hourigan Memorial Award

This fund was created in memory of John A. (Jack) Hourigan by his family to support children and youth in education. Mr. Hourigan served on the Wellington Catholic District School Board as a Trustee from 1956-1986 and was devoted to Catholic education.

Eligibility Criteria:

• Student must be graduating from one of the listed high schools (including Bishop Macdonell, Our Lady of Lourdes, and St. James) and pursuing post-secondary education, whether university, college, apprenticeship or workplace training.
• Student must demonstrate potential for post-secondary success.
• Student must be actively involved in their community.
• Student must demonstrate active participation in Catholic life.

Mabel Anne Brouwer Scholarship Fund – Women in STEM Scholarship

This scholarship is named in memory of Anne Brouwer by her husband Walter Brouwer. Anne was a resident of Guelph for 47 years, and her memory will live on in the future female students it will support.

Eligibility Criteria:

• Student must be from a secondary school within The Wellington Catholic District School Board or The Upper Grand District School Board
• Student must be a woman, cisgender and transgender women are encouraged for nomination
• Student must be focused on science, engineering, math, physics or pharmacy
• Student must be a “deserving” student, demonstrating financial need and has proven academic success
• This student must be pursuing post-secondary education

Mary Phelan Scholarship

The Phelan Family created a scholarship fund, in memory of Mary Phelan, who was the first female Principal with the Wellington Catholic District School Board and taught in the classroom for more than 30 years. Many members of the Phelan family are educators and believe that it is important to recognize and reward students who choose post-secondary education, including both college and university bound students, who have achieved academic excellence.

Eligibility Criteria:

• Student must be a resident of Guelph or Wellington County
• Student must be a graduate of Mary Phelan Catholic School
• Student must be graduating from Bishop Macdonell and pursuing post-secondary education
• This student must have minimum of 80% average grade

Smith Heritage Scholarship

The Smith Heritage Scholarship celebrates generations of the Smith family, the extended family, and friends who have made a positive difference through their lifetime of achievements in their respective fields. This scholarship is founded by Brian Smith, who as a retired principal has been a lifelong champion for education and the students of Guelph. The goal of the scholarship is to help to improve the world through investing in extraordinary students pursuing this ambitious mission.

Eligibility Criteria:

• Student must be from the Upper Grand District School Board
• Student must be beginning post-secondary education in the following school year
• Student must be pursuing a degree in one of the following altruistic fields: medical science and healthcare, food sustainability, agriculture, environmental preservation, or educating children and youth
• Student must demonstrate admirable character, be highly capable, and gives to others
• Student must be hardworking and committed to their educational goals and show selflessness and kindness and want to help their community and beyond

Smith Valeriote Education Bursary

SmithValeriote Law Firm LLP created a bursary to support educational expenses of deserving students. They believe that it is important to encourage students who choose post-secondary education (either college or university) who may have financial barriers to success.

Eligibility Criteria:

• Student must be a resident of Guelph or Wellington County and be graduating from the Wellington Catholic District School Board or the Upper Grand District School Board
• Student must be pursuing post-secondary education
• There is a demonstrated need for financial support
• There is demonstrated respect for others and their community, potential to grow within their chosen area of study and may not necessarily qualify for any other student awards
• Recipients must be of different genders

Today’s students are facing unprecedented financial pressures as the cost of education and living continues to rise. These scholarships, which will be helpful to the students, often only scratch the surface of their upcoming financial need as they invest in their post-secondary education. Many of these students have been working full-time jobs while in school and will be supporting themselves financially.
