Helper Bees ReBoot Program #GCFGrantStories

The ReBoot program, led by the Church of the Apostles through its Helper Bees outreach program, brought together environmental action and community care in a practical and meaningful way. Community members donated new and gently used shoes and boots, which were collected, cleaned, repaired, and redistributed to local organizations serving individuals and families in need. Since the program started on June 1st, the program has already collected more than 1,000 pairs of footwear in a month, with donations continuing to arrive until July 15th! It is expected to exceed the original targets of collecting 1,500 pairs and redistributing 1,000 pairs of footwear to individuals and families in need!

Funding from a 2025 Community Grant supported the coordination, materials, volunteer engagement, and community partnerships that made the ReBoot program possible. Volunteers sorted, cleaned, repaired, and prepared footwear for redistribution, helping ensure quality shoes reached those who needed them most. A key outcome was the program’s partnership with Community of Hearts, where individuals with developmental exceptionalities volunteered in the program. Their participation in hands-on volunteer work helped to build confidence, skill development, and a sense of belonging. The program also expanded partnerships with the Guelph Tool Library, Shoeper Store, Hope House, Royal City Mission, The Clothing Closet, and Rachel’s Saturday Table. More than 75% of donated footwear came through Shoeper Store, significantly increasing the reach and impact of the initiative!

ReBoot gave footwear a second life while significantly reducing waste and creating valueable volunteer experiences. One memorable shoe cleaning session sparked excitement when participants discovered a donated limited-edition pair of sneakers! This surprise lead to laughter and connection that reflected the positive spirit of the program. The Church of the Apostles operates the Helper Bees outreach program, which develops projects that strengthen both community wellbeing and environmental sustainability. Through initiatives like ReBoot, the organization brings together volunteers, donors, businesses, and community agencies around a shared goal of helping people while caring for the planet.
