Supporting accessible camp experiences, where friendships are made and challenges are understood
For over 75 years, Belwood Lodge and Camp has provided a unique holiday experience for children, youth, and adults with intellectual disabilities. Since 1946, the camp has offered an engaging, safe environment where participants can build positive, life-long friendships, strengthen their social skills, and create lasting memories. Located on the shores of Belwood Lake in Belwood, Ontario, it has become a place many participants consider their home away from home.
Belwood provides a safe and fun overnight camp experience for youth and adults with autism and other spectrum disorders, down syndrome, cerebral palsy, acquired brain injuries, and other intellectual disabilities. Accessibility and inclusion are central to the Belwood experience, and the entire location is wheelchair accessible. The camp offers sports such as baseball, basketball, soccer, tennis and volleyball, and it has a fully accessible pool. It also offers theatre, dance, arts & crafts, nature and special skills building programs.
A typical day at camp involves a variety of activities in the morning, followed by a smaller group time of their choice of activities and clubs in the afternoon. The day ends with all the campers coming together for an evening activity, such as a concert, campfire, and/or modified tag games. Belwood welcomes new participants each year but is particularly proud of the strong community that they have built of dedicated campers and staff who return each year.
