Over the past year, Hope House Guelph’s Guelph Community Backpack Project has made a meaningful impact for children and families across the community. In 2025, the program distributed 2,991 backpacks filled with grade appropriate school supplies across 12 community pick up sites with the help of 238 volunteers and 793 volunteer hours.
Children shared overwhelmingly positive feedback, with 94% feeling happy and excited and 95% percent feeling ready for school. These outcomes show how the project helped students feel confident, prepared, and included as they returned to school. Families described how the support eased financial pressure during a stressful time. As one parent shared, “Without this program, I would likely be short on paying my hydro bill.” Educators also reported that students who came prepared stay more engaged throughout the school year!
Funding from a Community Grant 2025 supported this community driven and long-standing initiative that removes barriers to education for children and youth. Families experiencing poverty, housing instability, or adjusting to life in a new country were able to access supplies through a dignified and welcoming system. Each child selected their own backpack, reinforcing autonomy and inclusion. Partnerships strengthened the program, with 12 organizations hosting pick up locations and others supporting through donations, promotion, and volunteer coordination. This year also introduced new collaboration with public health partners, adding hygiene items such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, and dental health information into each backpack, expanding the support beyond school readiness to include health and wellness resources.
Hope House Guelph is a community based organization focused on creating access, opportunity, and inclusion for individuals and families facing barriers. Through programs like the Backpack Project, the organization provides practical supports while helping children build confidence and fully engage in school. By working with strong community partners, Hope House Guelph continues to expand access and ensure families feel supported and included.
