Over the last five months, the Children’s Reading Room has created something very special for families with young children through its Baby Book Club Program. The Club has welcomed more than 100 family visits, with about 70% returning regularly, showing how strongly families value the experience! With support from a Community Grant, more than 220 books have already been shared, extending the impact into homes and daily routines. Families consistently describe the program as welcoming and engaging, highlighting the joy of singing, reading, and connecting with others. Many arrive through word of mouth, encouraged by friends, and leave with new relationships that continue beyond the sessions. The Baby Book Club has become a much loved part of the community for these young families, as it combines early literacy development with developing feelings of belonging and support.
Responding to clear community demand, the program was designed to offer a welcoming weekly space where caregivers and babies come together to share stories, sing songs, and build early literacy skills. What began as a pilot quickly proved its value, serving families who had struggled to access other programs and creating an environment that feels inclusive, consistent, and deeply supportive. Families gather for circle time filled with songs and stories, followed by informal moments where babies explore books and toys while caregivers connect with one another. Each session is thoughtfully led by an experienced early childhood educator and blends learning, play, and connection in a way that feels both simple and impactful. The Club has been especially meaningful for those experiencing isolation or adjusting to new circumstances, offering a place where people feel seen and included.
Baby Book Club focuses on building confidence and connection for both children and caregivers that lasts beyond the sessions themselves. GCF funding supported a key part of the experience, which allowed every family to take home a free book after each visit. This helps build home libraries and encourages reading from an early age. The program was hosted in a bright, welcoming space at the Guelph Youth Music Centre. The large windows helped to creates a calm and inviting environment where families can feel comfortable, supported, and excited to return each week.
