Small Change Fund, in partnership with The Guelph Outdoor School, received a 2024 Community Grant to support their project Next Child in the Woods, an initiative focused on expanding access to green spaces and inclusive outdoor mentorship programs for children and youth in Guelph.
This grant helped the program grow to meet the community’s need for more outdoor learning opportunities. The initiative focuses on land-based education that supports physical health, mental and emotional well-being, and developing a strong sense of belonging. With this increased access to outdoor space at the Barber Scout Camp, the program can now welcome more children, including those with disabilities, thanks to accessible trails, washrooms, and indoor spaces.
Since COVID-19, demand for this kind of programming has grown in our community. This expansion into using more space allows more children to be able to enjoy the benefits of spending time in nature, which supports their development and resilience. This has given so many children, no matter their background or ability, the chance to explore nature, build confidence, and connect with the environment. The project also made it possible to offer more inclusive field trips and training for youth mentors.
Since receiving this grant, the organizations have seen more local and regional groups getting involved. They’ve also noted an increase in interest being expressed for outdoor education opportunities. These experiences help children build a lasting connection to nature and their community. As one program leader said, it’s about helping kids “learn to love the nature that surrounds them”, and that love leads to care and responsibility for the land they call home.
