Chalmers Community Services Centre #GCFGrantStories

Chalmers Community Services Centre received a 2024 Community Grant to support their Café Gatherings, a warm and welcoming program that helps people feel included and connected.

This program is more than just a place for locals to grab a snack. Chalmers Community Services Centre offers a friendly space where individuals and families facing food insecurity, loneliness, depression or other challenges can come together. Many guests are newcomers to Canada, and some also need help with accessing clothing, hygiene items, or connections to other social supports. Every week, over 300 guests come by Chalmers during café mornings and on their distribution days. Visitors are welcomed with coffee, tea, friendly chats, and information about local support services, like clothing, shoe fittings, job help, and housing support.

This grant helped Chalmers in purchasing a commercial dishwasher for the café, which has been a tremendous help in allowing them to be able to serve more people. Before this, volunteers had to wash all the dishes by hand, which took up a lot of time where they could connecting with the people they serve. Now, thanks to the new dishwasher, volunteers have more time to accommodate more guests, help them find what they need, and make everyone feel welcome.

This change has made a big difference in Chalmers Community Services Centre because now with this increased capacity, over 50 guests on average visit the café — proof that small improvements can create stronger and more compassionate communities where everyone feels they belong!
